Possessive Nouns (Kata Benda Kepemilikan)

Possessive nouns adalah nouns (kata benda) yang memiliki makna kepemilikan atau kepunyaan.

Beberapa contoh possessive nouns:

  • a cat’s tuna (tuna punyanya si kucing)
  • a man’s jacket (jaket punyanya orang)
  • a fish’s eggs (telur punyanya si ikan)

Pada umumnya possessive nouns memiliki makna kepunyaan. Tetapi sebenarnya possessive nouns tidak selalu memiliki arti kepunyaan, bisa juga memiliki arti lainnya. Beberapa di antaranya yaitu:

1. Possessive nouns memiliki makna kepunyaan:

  • It is Andika’s car.
  • Yoggie drove his friend’s car.
  • We are having a party at Fanny’s house.
  • They are Australia’s gold reserves.

2. Possessive nouns bisa menunjukkan tempat seseorang bekerja, belajar, atau beraktifitas:

  • This is Andika’s school.
  • This is Andika’s room.

3. Possessive nouns bisa menunjukkan tempat seperti sekolah, gereja, kantor atau restoran berdasarkan gelar atau nama orang yang berada di tempat tersebut:

  • Is Saint Mary’s an all-girls school?
  • Harvard’s attendance was down last year.
  • Is St. John’s a Catholic church?
  • I’ve got an appointment at the dentist’s at eleven o’clock.
  • Shall we go to Luigi’s for lunch?

4. Possessive nouns bisa menunjukkan hubungan keluarga:

  • Andika’s mother is running late.
  • Mrs Prabaharyaka’s colleague will not be coming to the meeting.
  • Michele Obama is the President’s wife.

5. Possessive nouns juga bisa menunjukkan hal yang tidak berwujud:

  • Andika’s patience is running out.
  • The politician’s hypocrisy was deeply shocking.

6. Possessive nouns bisa berfungsi sebagai penunjuk waktu:

  • a day’s work
  • a day’s salary
  • today’s newspaper
  • two days’ salary
  • a month’s pay
  • in a year’s time
  • three years’ insurance
  • a two weeks’ vacation

7. Possessive nouns yang memiliki makna lainnya:

  • For God’s sake! (Perkataan putus asa)
  • a stone’s throw away (Berjarak sangat dekat)
  • at death’s door (Sakit hampir mati)
  • in my mind’s eye (Di dalam imaginasi)
  • Five dollars’ worth (Seharga 5 dolar)
  • The Children’s Minister (Sama sekali tak memiliki makna kepunyaan, bukan kementrian miliknya anak-anak, namun kementrian yang mengurusi anak-anak)
  • Rembrandt’s paintings (Sama sekali tak memiliki makna kepunyaan, bukan lukisan miliknya Rembrandt, melainkan lukisan yang dilukis oleh Rembrandt’s)

Ada beberapa aturan yang harus diikuti dalam membuat possessive nouns. Beberapa di antaranya yaitu:

1. Untuk membuat singular nouns yang tidak berakhiran [s] menjadi possessive nouns, kamu perlu menambahkan ['s].

  • Maryam’s new handbag matches her shoes perfectly.

3. Untuk membuat plural nouns yang berakhiran [s] menjadi possessive nouns, kamu hanya perlu menambahkan apostrophe ['] pada akhir kata plural nouns.
