Object Complement (Pelengkap Object)

Melanjutkan pembahasan indirect object.

object complement

Object complement adalah noun (kata benda), pronoun (kata ganti), atau adjective (kata sifat) setelah direct object yang menerangkan namanya, mendeskripsikannya, atau menjelaskan lokasinya.

Karena object complement merupakan pelengkap direct object maka kamu hanya bisa menemukannya pada kalimat yang memiliki transitive verb. Nama lainnya object complement adalah objective complement atau object predicate.

Biasanya yang ada object complement adalah kalimat dengan verb of making (to make, to create, dll) atau verb of naming (to name, to call, to elect). Pada contoh di bawah ini, yang diberi bold adalah direct object sedangkan yang diberi garis bawah adalah object complement.

To name her Rika.

To make her happy.

Selain kedua jenis verb diatas (verb of naming dan verb of making), beberapa jenis verb lainnya juga bisa dilengkapi dengan object complement.

To paint something blue.

To consider someone smart.

To catch somebody stealing.

Object complements dan Adverbs

Berhati-hatilah terhadap dua bentuk kalimat dibawah ini karena keduanya mirip tetapi yang satu tidak memiliki object complement sedangkan yang satunya memiliki object complement.

She called the man yesterday.

She called the man a liar.

Dari dua kalimat diatas kita bisa mengetahui bahwa “man” adalah direct object.

Pada kalimat pertama, yesterday adalah adverb (kata keterangan) yang menjelaskan kapan sehingga pada kalimat ini tidak terdapat object complement. Sedangkan pada kalimat kedua, “liar” menerangkan nama “man” sehingga liar merupakan object complement.
