Kesalahan Pemakaian So dan Such

Sebagian besar orang yang baru belajar bahasa Inggris merasa susah dalam membedakan so dan such, tetapi sebenarnya gampang saja menggunakan kedua kata ini.

jika kita menggunakannya sebelum adjective (kata sifat) atau adverb (kata keterangan), gunakanlah “so”. Contoh:

  • It was so hot that we had to open the windows.
  • The weather was so lovely that we decided to go for a picnic.
  • He drives so fast that I’m sure he will have an accident before long.

Jika kita menggunakannya sebelum noun (kata benda) atau noun phrase (frase noun), gunakan “such”. Contoh:

  • It was such a hot day that we had to open the windows.
  • It was such lovely weather that we decided to go for a picnic.
  • They are such awful children that I don’t invite them to our house.

Catatan, ada dua pengecualian selain dari peraturan diatas, mereka adalah:

jika noun mengikuti little, few, much, atau many, kita akan membutuhkan so, meskipun kita menggunakan noun maupun frase noun. Contoh:

  • There were so few students that they decided to close the class.
  • We had so little money that we couldn’t afford to buy any lunch.
  • There are so many new cars that it’s difficult to choose beetween them.
  • They gave us so much information that we couldn’t remember it all.

Satu hal penting untuk diingat adalah, dalam menulis kita harus menggunakan so atau such jika ada kata “that” setelahnya. hal ini karena so dan such digunakan untuk penekanan yang bisa diekspresikan dalam bahasa Inggris dengan intonasi, dan so atau such dikatakan dengan penekanan. Tapi dalam tulisan, sangat sulit untuk menunjukkan penekanan kecuali kita menggunakan “that” ditambah clause atau anak kalimat. jika kita tidak menggunakan “that”, maka sebaiknya kita tidak menggunakan so atau such, tetapi kita gunakan “very”. Sebagai contoh:

  • It was so cold that we had to wear hats, gloves and scarves. Berubah jadi: It was very cold.
  • It was such a cold day that we had to wear hats, gloves, and scarves. Berubah jadi: It was very cold.
